Chiang Rai is a northern Thai province famous for its natural splendour and fascinating cultural attractions. During our second day in the province we got to experience some of these attractions for ourselves, beginning with an unforgettable elephant ride to Karen Ruammit Village, a tribal settlement which has a long-standing and rich tradition when it comes to the training and use of elephants. As you can see from our footage, the scenery was lush, emerald green and breath-taking, composed of rice fields and forested hills, topped with a beautiful blue sky. The contrast between the hustle and bustle of Bangkok and this quiet country locale was overwhelming – and our elephant kindly stopped at regular intervals so we could drink in the beauty of the landscape – although, on reflection, perhaps he was simply more concerned with eating the landscape himself…
Another highlight of our second day in Chiang Rai was our visit to an Akha village, where we were fortunate enough to be invited into one of the homes of the villagers – and we got to share a little of our world with them too! Visiting the tribespeople is an incredible experience. While they enjoy watching television and have adapted to a more modern way of life, they still retain many time-honoured traditions and customs, and their warmth and good humour is infectious.
The third attraction on our round-up of day 2 is Huay Mae Sai waterfall. Now while Thailand is famous for its beaches, you may not realize that it has many stunning waterfalls too – many of which are popular places for locals to come and swim or enjoy a picnic in a peaceful natural setting. Huay Mae Sai is one of them, and as you can see, a dip in the cool waters of this pristine fall is guaranteed to make you feel invigorated as well as relaxed!
Well, we hope you’ve enjoyed checking out some of Chiang Rai’s beautiful hotspots on our second day in the province – be sure to stay tuned to experience more Chiang Rai wonders with your intrepid iTravel hosts!
